a. Urine Drainage Lumen: This lumen is responsible for draining urine from the bladder. It allows continuous or intermittent urine flow from the bladder to an external collection bag.
b. Balloon Inflation Lumen: Similar to other Foley catheters, the external urethral catheter has a balloon that can be inflated using sterile water or saline solution. The inflated balloon helps secure the catheter in place.
c. Irrigation Lumen: The third lumen is used for irrigation purposes. It allows healthcare professionals to flush the catheter and bladder with sterile fluids, such as saline solution or medicated solutions, if necessary.
Latex Material: The external urethral catheter is made of latex, which provides flexibility and softness for patient comfort during external use. However, it's important to consider latex allergies and use alternative materials, such as silicone or hydrogel-coated latex, for patients with latex sensitivities.
Size Options: The external urethral catheter comes in various sizes to accommodate different patient anatomies and needs. Sizes are typically indicated in French (Fr) units, which represent the diameter of the catheter tubing.
Sterility: Similar to other medical catheters, the external urethral catheter is typically supplied sterile and individually packaged to ensure infection control during insertion and use.
